Help: 850 CV-Joint Half shaft re-assembly 850 1997

I got a re-manufactured half shaft assembly for the passenger side (right side). I have tried to re-insert the new half shaft in the transmission. It is not fully in the transmission. How can I push it in there? Is there a trick.

I did not have any difficulty pulling the old one. However, the new one one does not want to get fully in.

Thank you.

Well sport that is the easy side. It should just about darn near fall back into place. If it does not you need to make sure the the splines are engaged properly in the transmission and when they are just give it a tap on the far end with a rubber mallet. Now if it is not engaged you will screw up the shaft and the gears inside the box. Also, when you go to tap it you need to make sure that the axle joints are compressed all the way so it will transmit the force of your blow. With any luck you are just hung up on the circlip on the end of the shaft that goes into the trans. If it does not engage the gears like it should then you need to pull it out and compare it to the old one, if it looks the same then try and refit the old one and see how that goes. All the while be very careful that you do not booger up the seal that it goes through on the trans. If you have not done one before it is probably just a case of inexperience and you don't have the experience doing many of these that would allow you to say "hey I need the BFH right here". What ever the reason it shows good thinking on your part, I have seen far too many trainnies and rookies destroy stuff because they did not have the presence of mind to say, "maybe I should ask someone before I screw this thing up"

I tried the old axle. It does go in and out easily. The new one will not get in.

The new axle (from NAPA, number on box is #6012) is different from the old one. From the mid bearing on the axle to the transmission, the axle diameter is smaller than the original one. The spindle tread that goes in the transmission is longer than the original one. I think I got the wrong part.

I do not know who is the manufacturer of the NAPA axle but I suspect it is CCTaxle.com. If I search "Advance Auto Parts" store for the correct axle, I get the number #6012 from CCT (same number that NAPA gaves me). If I go to the CCT web site, they tell me that the correct axle for my car is #6016. The #6012 according to CCT is for the non-turbo 850 with manual transmission.

Tomorrow, I will call CCT. Either their online catalog is wrong or else NAPA.

Also, FCP Groton and IPD have a different axle part number for the turbo 850 vs the non-turbo. At NAPA, they only have one part number. Something is wrong!

      Thank you.

Sounds like you got the wrong one for sure. The place I usually deal with pulled that b.s. on me last time. They said one part number fits all and I know that is not the case but I let them send it anyhow. I rolled the dice on it and got lucky as the part they sent was the right one and fit. Please tell me you got that at your local parts store and are not playing the mail order game, that would really suck on something as big and bulky as an axle. Not to mention that your car has probably been torn apart for Memorial Day weekend, fun fun fun.

I went this morning to a local Volvo part supplier (http://voluparts.com/ , I am in Atlanta). I took with me the original axle and the one I got from NAPA. They told me the axle from NAPA has been rebuilt incorrectly. It will not fit any Volvo. The axle, from the inner CV joint to the transmission appears to be from a V70 AWD. From the inner CV joint to the wheel, the axle is the correct one for an 850. I got another axle (from Voluparts this time). This one appears to be identical to the original one. I went to the NAPA store and returned the defective axle. So tonight I will try again.

I also talked to CCTaxle technical support. They told me that the part number that I got from NAPA is correct. The problem is not NAPA but it is that CCT did not rebuilt the axle correctly.

BTW: We have a backup for the car. We recently got a 2005 Honda Odyssey EX-L. This minivan is replacing the Volvo. I am fixing the Volvo before selling it. After the axle, my next job is to replace the odometer gear in the instrument cluster.
