does the engine need to be removed to do this?

Ummmmm, No?, Is that the answer you are looking for. The question is just a tad on the vague side, a few details would be nice. Any seal in particular, all of the seals, ummm maybe just the oil fill cap gasket? Details please.

If you're talking about a rear main seal leak, no the engine doesn't need to come out...but the tranny does.
