Whirring sound coming from engine V70-XC70 1998

1998 v70 awd, sound coming from engine sounds like a whirring high pitched when first driving and sometimes at end of driving you can hear it cycle. It starts with a low pitch to a high pitch and then cycles back down. Usually only lasts for 30 sec to min. Sounds a little like an electric weed wacker. Explanation?

Possibly a water pump that's about to give out..... either that or a bad alternator. If it's a growl, it's the former. If it's an electrical sound, it's the latter. Either way, it's going to need attention ASAP before you're stranded on the road somewhere.

Is there a way to figure out which one it is? It makes this sound when the car is first driven after being started.

I'll bet it's the air blower you hear. Sounds like a vaccum cleaner? It's located underneath the battery and blows air into the exhaust (I believe) via a valve until the engine warms up. It's a pollution-control device.

I forget what the "proper" name for the thing is, but you can do a search on it.
