Whirring sound coming from engine V70-XC70 1998

I'll bet it's the air blower you hear. Sounds like a vaccum cleaner? It's located underneath the battery and blows air into the exhaust (I believe) via a valve until the engine warms up. It's a pollution-control device.

I forget what the "proper" name for the thing is, but you can do a search on it.
