Well, this morning on my way into work, my Volvo ( 1999 S70 NA) scared the hell outta me. While driving down the interstate this morning, the ETS light came on, the cruise dis-engaged, and the car started bucking wildly every time I let off the gas. I drove it the rest of the way to work, (another 50 miles) with no problem at all in getting here. (drove 90+ just to get here quicker) Once I got here, I turned the car off, pulled the key out of the ignition, said a prayer, re-inserted the key, and turned it over. It cranked up fine, nice smooth throttle, and no ETS light. Can someone please explain to me what could be going on with it? Do I need to be looking for another ETS before long? Will my car run without the ETS working properly, or will it just refuse to run? This is gonna blow my budget outta the water if I have to come up with a new ETS this week.

Just drove the car to town, and no problems at all. (knock on wood) I did some research on the NHTSA website, and they started an investigation into the problem we are experiencing with the ETS. I encourage anyone who owns one of these cars, and has had, or is having a problem with their ETS, to go to the website that hi-tek-rednek mentioned ( http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/defect/ ) and file a complaint. You will need your vin # and more info about your car. It takes about 10 minutes to file a complaint. There have only been 131 complaints filed about this problem so far with them, so the more complaints they get about the problem, the more likely they will do something about it.(recall, recall, recall) It sure would save us all a lot of cash!

NHTSA opened an investigation of the ETS problems on Volvo cars. I HOPE they can do something about it. Here's the link: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/defect/

thanks for the heads up. my ets failed at 80K. i complained to volvo about the failure especially at the cost to have it repaired. they replied that if i couldn't afford to repair the car i souldn't have bought it. i guess they just don't get the point. that part should last the life of the car and at least be as reliable as the mechanical system it replaces. it isn't. i've got a really bad taste in my mouth about the whole thing.

I understand about the bad taste. I have one right now knowing that someday it will go out for good. I just hope they issue a recall beforehand though. Go to the website and file a complaint. Maybe the next time it happens to you, it will be a free replacement. :)

I've already had this module and more replaced less than a year ago at a cost of almost $3k. The check engine light came back on within a few months and now the ETS light is back on. My 1999 V70 XC is a lemon in any state with lemon laws.

If you're an XC owner and don't know about this, you need to. Read all the posts:
