What is the A/C sensor above the passenger and driver's door handle? 850

My climate control system no longer works. My OBDI does not blink any code when I test the CC system. The sensor above the passenger side handle is making a loud noise, as if something is caught in the motor. The sensor on the drivers side (if there is a sensor there), appears to not be running at all. What is this sensor? Could this be a cause of the problem? My REC and A/C lights on the front panel blink 17 times, is that indicative of any certain failure?

    Does the system work at all? Mine blinked a lot when the variable resistor blew (water stored so check your drain lines). May be that, mine would light up and everything but wouldn't blow anything because the blower fan was essentially dead. changed the resistor and bam everythign worked. good luck.

    It is a little temp sensor for the climate control. There is a little fan in each that moves air over the sensor.

      Does that motor constantly spin, even when the CC system is not on?
      Anything else I should look at?

        I'm not sure if it spins all the time. I have been told that there is a little shield that can be pryed out, then blow it out with some air supply, and put the screen back. I understand that they can get clogged with dirt, although I have not experienced that as yet. I thinks it spins a very low rate, just enough to move air over the sensor.

          Thanks for the help MoreGolf. Since I'm not getting any blinking lights from the ODBI, do the 17 blinks from the console lights mean anything?

    Sorry, never specified in the initial post...the car is a 1993.
