Intermittent turn signal failure with new ignition switch 850 1996

Hi,

My '96 850 (130,000mi) recently developed an intermittent turn signal failure problem. I suspected the electrical portion of the ignition switch and so I replaced it this past weekend. However, the turn signal still fails (intermittently but most of the time it does not work).

I had ABS module repaired by Vic some three months ago (the ABS works fine since then - no ABS light). The turn signal lights (bulbs) are OK. When the turn signal stops working, everything else is fine (dash lights on, headlamps on, can shift into gear).

Perhaps the stalk switch? I've read that they rarely fail.

Thank you for your advice,
Peter

Found my own problem: Intermittent turn signal failure with new ignition switch 850 1996

I may have found the problem: the replacement switch was bad.

Last night the key would not go back from the start position (makes for a really ugly sound of starter not disengaging after the engine starts up). First I thought the mechanical part of the ignition switch was bad but then I realized the spring that returns the key from start position is inside the electrical switch. So I put the old switch back and the starter problem was fixed.

Now off to RMA the new switch. Go figure - it was a genuine Volvo part. Hopefully the new new switch will fix my signal light problem.

Peter

Follow up question on switches 850 1996

I have a 1995 volvo 850 with a bad ignition switch....once the car is started, several lights are on and there are no signal lights...abs light is on, and tracs is on.....again...signals, and abs do not work....but giggle the key back a bit while the car is running and the abs and trac lights go off, the abs works, and the signal work. How much was the new ignition switch?

Follow up question on switches 850 1996

The switch is just over $50. Which is fine by me. If it only lasted more than three days. It'll be interesting to find out whether they take it back (or replace it).

Peter
