Gas gauge (dumb question) 850

Okay,
With the spike in gas prices I tend to be watching my gauge at lot these days and got to wondering the following...
The 70/50/30 mark indicators, I take as being percentage of fuel left in the tank. (Why is full 70%, and would that mean I still have 30% when it reads empty?) The gauge does start to drop immediately after filling up when I drive.
Not that I intend to keep driving when the car reads empty, just curious.
Anyone?

    Gas gauge (dumb question) 850

Isn't it the number of litres of fuel left in the tank? The US cars have marks at 18,12,6 gallons (about 70, 47 and 24 litres).

Yup, that's the remaining amount of fuel. Strange how confusing it can be. The first time I got into my (then unfamiliar) car, it was at night. I started it up, the needle pointed to 12, and I made a mental note to check the charging system, since 12 volts is too low.... :)

        Okay, that makes perfect sense.
Do 850's & V70's sold in the states have gas guages that also read in metric?
