Gas gauge (dumb question) 850

Okay,
With the spike in gas prices I tend to be watching my gauge at lot these days and got to wondering the following...
The 70/50/30 mark indicators, I take as being percentage of fuel left in the tank. (Why is full 70%, and would that mean I still have 30% when it reads empty?) The gauge does start to drop immediately after filling up when I drive.
Not that I intend to keep driving when the car reads empty, just curious.
Anyone?
