odometer problem 850 1997

I have a 1997 volvo 850 with 89,708 miles on It. The problem is the odometer.
About a month ago, when I started to drive, I noticed that the odometer was not moving. However after about 1-2 miles, it started working again. Afew days ago, however, It completely stopped working, both the trip odometer and the total mileage odometer.
The speedometer is working fine.
What could be the problem with it? Do I need to have the whole odometer kit replaced?

There is a plastic gear that breaks in the odometer.
The gear is sold in eBay.

I just did this on my '94. It's not too bad a job, I was done in 45 minutes. Basically, you removed the top pad of the dash, disconnect two harnesses, lift out the instrument cluster, remove a few screws on the back of the cluster (12 AFAIR), lift the odometer assembly out, remove two screws that hold the stepper motor on the odometer, and replace the teeny-tiny, itty-bitty gear ( it's price will shock you...I paid $40, but have found I can get it cheaper from a few other sources).. and then put it all back together. I was done in 45 minutes.

I did mine on my 97 also but when I did it I forgot to take out the "service" light bulb. Remove it while you have the cluster out and cover the hole with a piece of electrical tape. I wish I would have removed mine. Now I just have to wait for it to burn out. Although, it goes out 2 minutes after start up.

        Good luck!

        Henry
