Gas cap door won't open. Solenoid okay. Relay? 850

Gascap door stopped opening last week. Had to use the wire loop pull to open it. Took out the little motor/solenoid, and it was all right. When connected to a twelve vote supply, it would cycle back and forth as you reversed the the leads to the battery, as it should. When I hit the remote lock, it locks the gas cap door. When I hit the remote open, it will not release the gas cap door. This tells me it is not the solenoid, but some relay back up the line that has stopped reversing the voltage to the little solenoid motor.

Can anyone out there tell me where to look next? Is it indeed a relay that reverses the voltage to the solenoid so it will attract and retract? Or is it something else. I don't want to run to a wrecking yard and score another solenoid, only to discover it's something else. Any advice much appreciated. Dick

The solenoid pushes against a piece of metal, is it bent? Try bending it back into position. Sounds like your relays are OK.

same thing happened to me on a 2000XC. i honestly don't know what i did to get it open though i did cycle the ignition switch a number of times and pressed the remote door lock. finally it opened. i think the problem was in the relay in the drivers door. i should also mention that i also removed the interior trim panels in way of the solenoid. volvo in all their great wisdom didn't attach a manual release as is found on most cars with the locking door flap.

The opening system is different for the 850 and the XC70...

Common for the door hinge spring to go south on these. Maybe that's the issue with yours. www.fcpgroton.com sells a kit with a new hinge spring. It won't be on their web site so you'll have to call them.

    Good luck!

Took out the door latching mechanism. Two screws on the outside, one on the inside. Disconnected the power and then took the little motor driven assembly apart. Nothing looked wrong with it, and when I bench tested it with a battery and some alligator clips, the little servo motor snapped the latch back and forth as you reversed the leads. Which lead me to believe that the locking relay located somewhere inside the chassis, wasn't sending the reverse signal to open it. It would close and lock, but not open. However, after taking it apart, putting it back together, bench testing it and then spraying the contacts with CRC, it works perfectly after reinstallation. A mystery I hope I don't have to explore any further. Dick
