A/C damper shaft repair? 850

My mechanic diagnosed my automatic temperature control fault as being in the damper shaft for the main damper. It is split and therefore the damper does not function correctly.

The full fix on this is to pull and replace the whole heater/AC unit, at 10-12 hours plus parts. Is there any way to fix this problem without pulling the whole unit?
