We were evacuated a couple of days ago so we loaded up two out of our 3 volvos (where's a wagon when you need one?). More fortunate that many, we were only out of our house for a day.

With my work closed I had time to begin tackling two issues with my wife's 1997 850 GLT with 140,000 miles:

1. Check engine light. Code 422 Barometric sensor signal. Indie mechanic says no hurry to address as long as engine runs fine. Estimate is $186 part and $150 labor, although hinted that it might be tube/hose and not part. Suggestions?

2. For several months have had slight coolant leak, need to top up about 1x per week. Indie mechanic looked from under lift and says it "appears" to be from the water pump and estimates $440 for parts and labor, including new timing belt as long as he is in there. I'm a little concerned it might not be water pump because he said those rarely fail. Hoses have been recently replaced. There is a little antifreeze crust around the thermostat housing seam but doesn't seem to be enough to account for loss. How hard of a job is the water pump?
