Bad receiver/drier ?? 850 1993

The A/C worked great all summer on my new (to me) 93 850 with 98K. Then come September it was done. My mechanic looked at it and said it was the receiver/drier rusted out from the inside.

My questions:

1. Is this a common problem? The rust doesn't surprise me as this is, after all, a 14 year old car. He showed me some small rust spots. BTW - Should I still be concerned about the evaporator? Previous owner rarely used the A/C.

2. The drier looks like a fairly easy DYI replacement. Comments?
