Engine dies, no RPM's when accelerated depressed - no codes S70 1998

I have 98 S70 T5 M with 162K. Recently while drive something cut off in the engine and I lose my acceleration. When you give it gas nothing happens (RPM's go down) but the engine is still running. Once you engage the cluth the engine dies. The car starts back up either right away or it needs to sit for a minute. It will then run fine for awhile. The fuel filter was just replaced so this should not be the issue.

Any ides of what to look for. It is an intermittent mystery problem.
