Radio static on AM 850

Original radio in 1993 GLT is getting poor reception on distant AM stations while driving. When engine is off the static is gone. Fine on FM. Tape and CD changer are ok also. Any idea where to look first? I do hear the static subside when engine is shut down and the ECM fan spools to a stop.
