Gear shifter ???? 850 1996

I have been on the prowl for an 850 or V70. Next week I am going to go look at a 1996 Volvo 850 wagon (Turbo, I think) 2.3 engine with 136K miles. Owners says the car runs very smooth, strong and is very reliable. The transmission shifts very smooth with no slipping. The catch is that the gear shifter will not shift until you press the "override button". Does anybody have any ideal what this guy is talking about? Would this be a simple fix? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
