Guess I'm wondering how the typical service department operates.

Are there usually multiple service writers? Do the techs follow only what the service writer tells them? Would it be unusual to ask for a specific service writer and/or tech? Is one more important that the other for getting the job done right? Is there a good way to let these folks know they do a good job?

Just trying to learn how to get the best service...consistently. All hints appreciated.
