Does the Check Engine light turn itself off? V70-XC70 1999

About 2 weeks ago, the wife reported that the Check Engine light was on in our 99 V70 T5M. I noted that the gas cap was tight, and that the car had used a quarter of a tank of fuel since being filled. I decided to ignore the light until I had time to deal with it.

10 days later, I drove the car myself & noted that the Check Engine light was no longer lit (except during the self test on startup). I wasn't aware that they reset themselves. Anyone know how many cycles it is supposed to take?
