Losing oil...now I am really upset! 850

I have been working hard on bringing the wife's 1995 850 wagon - non turbo, up to speed. Body is in very good shape, interior is perfect...I put on new tires/ alignment, timing belt, full a/c (evap., etc...took me three days), heater core...and a bunch of other stuff. Took it for a nice 1000 mile vacation two weeks ago...very nice.
Now, checked the oil, I see that over the past 400 miles, I have lost a quart of oil. No external leaks...driveway is clean...no oil on the outside of the engine. I will do a compression test tomorrow...but I fear that this oil loss means trouble.
Any helpful hints or words of encouragement?
