Axle 850

Last night I was removing the 36mm nut on the hub of my 1994 n/a 850. My husband bought a 4 foot section of pipe as an extension to get enough torque to pop it off. I have a manual transmission and when he tried to take it off the axle turned. Shouldn't it be locked if the car is in gear. Also, did he damage the transmission? We are changing the axle, the boots are torn and since a new one is only $109 at IPD we decided to go that route instead of fixing the old one. The car has 175k on it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Margaret
