In my current stump-me-good volvo endeavor, I'm working at my sister's 1998 S70. It has horrible starts on cold mornings, sputtering and usually stalling a few times. When warm or when ambient temps are up, it runs like a top.
It has codes P0171 (fuel mixture lean) and P0172 (fuel mixture rich). They continually return if reset. I have now replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter, plug wires, cap, and rotor, all as other maintenance items. I have searched high and low for vacuum leaks and all seems tight. Yesterday, I put in a new engine temp sensor, to no avail.
Any guesses? I'm going to check the fuel pressure while cold on the weekend. Beyond a faulty regulator or pump, I'm thinking possibly MAF sensor or O2 sensor(s) could be the culprit, but I'm hesitant to start blind guessing on these expensive items. Anyone know how to test the MAF on these cars?
I'll post back if I discover anything new . . . this is a problem I haven't run into before!
