I have a 2001 V70 T5 with 138K on the clock. It currently uses 5W30 of a petroleum based oil. 5W30 is what's used in a number of Ford V6's that I've owned. It seems that it is not uncommon for oil to be consumed/burned at a rate of 1 qt for every 1200 to 1500 miles. I'm finding that same phenomenon to be in place with the 2.3 liter T5. It's disappearing without a leak or a big cloud of blue smoke. My daughter is driving and caring for the car presently and she is not always diligent about checking the oil. For it to be down 2 qts is not unusual. My question is would that consumption/burning of oil cease if I went to a synthetic based oil? Is Mobil 1 still the current standard or can I use anyone's synthetic. Castrol is having a big advertising push touting their Edge branded synthetic as being so many times better than Mobil 1. All comments and opinions are welcome. I know the many are passionate about the use of synthetics in these engines. My question is would the consumption of oil cease.
