Brake noise V70-XC70 98

My wife has a 1998 v70 XWC. She has noticed a noise this week from the rear brakes. Sounds like a grinding noise when you hit the brakes and get the speed down to about 10 mph. I would think it needed new pads but the car only has 40m miles on it. And I would think the front pads would go first. Can anybody shed some light here? Appreciate any help. Also I have always heard disc brake pads are easy to change. Would any one know where i could print out some directions to do the change. Thanks in advance for any help.
