Engine warm up when very cold

My 'normal' cold start routine is to start the engine and engage reverse to back out of the garage. I need to appologize to those who park outside in sub freezing weather. My garage is about 20-25F in the cold weather.

When my daughter came home, her car got the garage spot and my 1998 has to park in the driveway. So, when I started my car at -7F, the engine sounded normal. But putting the car in gear, the tranny made terrible noises!! The sub zero tranny fluid, DEXII, didn't want to flow. Of course, the ATF cooler also doesn't help any because the radiator is also very cold.

After about 2-3 minutes of idle, the ATF was flowing and the tranny stopped its noise when engaged.

Moral: Very cold weather requires a warm up for the auto tranny. The engine is OK with the cold temps.
