Safety in an 850 or Vanagon 850 1993

As the owner of a '93 850, I love and appreciate the safety features that Volvo has put into the vehicle. However, I had a teacher who said that his '83 VW Vanagon had a safety record that was equal to any Volvo of that era. Were the Vanagons really that safe, as compared to Volvo?
