Some time ago you described a visual detail you use to distinguish an old-style SAS valve from the new style. You explained that you look up into the bottom of the valve for what looks like a cotter pin. I take it that the valve has to be off the engine to do this, right? Or is there some way to tell when it is still connected? I'm not thrilled about having to remove mine to inspect it. Any difference in part number or layout?

I appreciate you bringing this up. I'd think that Volvo would issue a TSB if there was an improved part available. I'm sure that a lot of customers would be interested in avoiding an air pump replacement.
