I heard a very minor little chatter in traffic the other day, sounding like tire noise more than anything. I went out of town and came back and drove the car and there was loud chatter and NO tension on parking brake lever. Took it over to average mechanic shop and they pulled the left rear rotor and it was a tangled mess of metal in there. Backplate damaged, cable severed, rotor interior scarred, and all the hardware.......like a blob of squished metal. The car is a 2004 v70 fwd with 214k miles. The regular brakes were fine. I KNOW this is a typical problem in Michigan winters and extended mile cars.
Do I fix it or forget about it? Looking at backplate ~60, brake shoes ~45, cable ~45, hardware ~30, rotor ~65 and a solid half-day minimum of my own labor. I've never done the cable on this car. The rest is straightforward. The hub seems fine.
I'm thinking about leaving as is.
