Climate control fan speed V70-XC70 1999

Have a -99 V70 with appx 180k. Today, the climate control fan has started acting strange in that the speed seems to vary with no input from me..:)
It's blowing cold from the A/C ( new compressor, drier, condenser and various other parts about a month ago). but at times with the force of an old smoker's lungs..It has a new pollen/cabin filter also.
Time for a new fan? Connections?
Tried changing the fan control face plate as I had a spare one. No changes...
Any ideas?
