I while back, I dynoed my car with basically nothing but Mobil 1 in the engine. My 94 855T ran a peak of 187hp at the wheels. I also did a run with AMSOIL in the engine and tranny and picked up about 5.6hp at the wheels. So my highest hp before any mods was 192.6hp, not bad considering the stock rating is 222hp. Assuming the 222hp at the engine is accurate, I lost about 13.3% from engine to tranny, which is pretty low, so I'm assuming with the AMSOIL in the engine and tranny, I picked up a couple horses over the stock 222hp, which makes sense with the back to back dyno runs.
A couple days ago, I had a 3" stainless steel downpipe, stainless steel 3" race catalytic convertor and a 2.5" stainless steel cat-back with a single silencer installed (silencer and tip polished stainless). While the car was being worked on, I also put 3.5 turns on the wastegate. And lastly, on the same day, I put on an open element, cone style K&N air filter. And I also disconnected the ECU's for about 48hours. Today, I went for a dyno run. The peak hp I got was 223.4hp. That's a 30.8hp increase at the wheels.
All runs were done on the same Dynojet dynanometer. The back to back runs comparing Mobil to AMSOIL were done at 25 degrees Celcius, 57% RH. Today's runs were run at 21 degrees Celcius and 41% RH. These were the actual environments inside the shop, and not just the weather from the weather report.
I spent a total of $1500 Canadian for the exhaust and filter for about 30hp at the wheels. So I say not bad for the money.
The only negatives I've found is that the exhaust is louder. At idle, it's a little louder, but honestly, barely louder than stock. Under medium load between 2500-3000rpm, the exhaust is noticeably louder and probably not for everyone, though it is still very acceptable. Compared to my uncles Mazda Protege from the early 90's, this car is quieter under load. And at the volumes I listen to my music to, I can't hear it even if I try.
One important thing to note about the mod is where the power increases came. Most importantly I picked up HUGE torque and hp increases in the low end rpm range. For a subjective description, the car pulls incredibly hard from just above idle now. It used to be gutless until I hit 2200rpm. Now, at 1250rpm, the car is already pulling hard and was shown in the dyno run. From 4000-6000, the car pulls ridiculously hard. The car stil doesn't pull as well through 3000-4000rpm as I would like. But it still pulls through 3000-4000rpm WAY faster than before. This is related to the programming in the ECU which I've discussed before, and should be remedied with a custom GIAC chip in the next little while.
All in all, the car is finally waking up and really making full use of what it is capable of.
