For your '96 model, view links relating to OBDII as for example http://www.obdii.com/. And also check for scan tools.

For the pre'96 models there ought to be a number of contributions in the Brickboard databas on the possiblity to connect your PC to the connector/indicator behind the right hand side lamp.

To my knowledge, there are presently no hardware/software solution publicly available for us enthusiast wanting to to know all about the control logics in the 850/70 series.
