See the link to a Brickboard RWD thread that discusses the use of reformulated gasoline as a potential cause of gunked-up, seized valves in a Volvo 960:

Have any 850/70 owners experienced this? Symptoms include a complete engine shutdown caused by valve failure, along with a gunked-up fuel system including deposits in the tank. This failure usually follows short-trip driving while using reformulated (MTBE/ethanol) gasoline found in selected urban areas. If you've experienced this, tell us what happened and how you think it was caused. Any cures? Such a failure has also occurred in a Volvo 740 after extended vehicle storage with reformulated gas in the tank, which resulted in extensive and hard-to-remove fuel system deposits.
