I noticed that the owners manual illustrates how you can switch off the daytime running lights on the headlamp switch. Since we're prevented from doing this in Canada because of some "law", the Canadian switches are configured so the daytime feature cannot be disabled. But it is possible to change this. The switch is essentially the same unit as found south of the border, except the slot-set screw piece is changed for a solid shaft piece. If the switch is removed out of the vehicle, one can carefully disassemble the switch and remove the solid shaft (or I suppose modify it by filing off some notches, - I left mine out) then sliding the three position sliding switch at the back of the switch from the "A" to the "C" postion. This will allow the switch to operate as normal - you'll actually be able to turn off the lights with the engine running!
But if you have three thumbs and are not somewhat mechanically inclined, you might want to leave this alone because you may break some of the tabs that keep the switch together. (I have no idea what a new switch costs) I took my switch apart a few times and reassembled it successfully without any damage, so it can be done!
The choice of daytime lights will now be yours, because you can leave the switch in the lamp position and turning off the ignition will shut off the lamps as normal.
