The swedish newspaper Aftonbladet (see www.aftonbladet.se) is reporting that unusually high electromagnetic fields have been measured inside recent model Volvos. The actual readings were as high as 18 microtesla (at the driver's left foot in a V70). Also showing high levels (but lower than the Volvo's) were Mercedes E-class and BMW 5-class. They claim that the high readings are due to having the battery in the trunk, rather than in the engine compartment (I didnt know they put them back there). Apparently, BMW and Mercedes do this as well, but run two cables forward to the engine, a positive and a ground. The Volvos only run one cable forward, grounding the battery in the back. This increases the electromagnetic field. When they added a longer ground cable to an S80, the electromagnetic field was reduced by a factor of 4-6.
