Noisy lifter 850 1995

I recall this was discussed briefly not too long ago but I don't recall there being any resolution.

I've driven my 855t 1000 miles since buying it a couple of weeks ago and noticed a very slight lifter noise only occasionally. Well, now it's pretty constant and I'm looking for advice. It sounds to be intake side, second cylinder from the timing belt. I've changed oil once since buying the car and switched to Mobil 1, 10W30, mostly for the turbo's sake. I'm not blaming the oil at all as the noise didn't get any better or worse then. It really became more frequent after I drove it harder than usual one day. I didn't flog it but just ran the tranny in "Sport" mode which let the revs build to around 4,500.

I understand this lifter issue is not uncommon with these "white" engines but I'm hoping to get lucky trying external fixes before biting the bullet and going in to find the lifter.

I didn't do an engine flush when I changed the oil and I'm considering that now as the oil I just put in is noticeably dirtier just 600 miles later. I'm thinking about one of the oil additive flushes that require idling the engine for 5 to 20 minutes then draining. My hope is this might clear any debris or deposits built up in or around the lifter.

I asked the service guys at our local Volvo dealership about this noise and they suggested the O-ring on the oil pickup tube might be cracked allowing aeration of the oil. I'd think this would affect oil pressure throughout the system. Makes me think that it might be worth dropping the pan to clean it and the oil pickup tube and replace the O-rings while there. I've noticed some minute black particles of dirt (?) or sludge on the end of the dipstick when checking the oil.

I know it's a huge PITA to pull the camshafts out and get at the lifters as the timing belt has to come off too. Tools would have to be made up to hold the camshafts, pull the head cover back down, etc.

Also, I notice when the lifter noise is at it's worst the idle throbs.

I'm thinking it's either a stuck, leaking or plugged lifter, I really don't want to think it's a stuck valve. Either way, the camshaft lobe is smacking the heck out of the lifter and not doing either any good.

The car runs great and is very strong but this is worring me. I'd really appreciate some advice.
