Painting side trim? 850

Hey guys and gals,
I was thinking about painting my side trim and would like to know what has to be done. Do you just paint it and thats that, or do you scuff it down a bit, put something on it? I have no clue what to do and if you do paint it will it scar eaisly? Gimme some help to help me finialize my thought.
