Full size spare and tire rotation

I just purchased a 1995 850. It has a "donut" as a spare tire. I would like to have a full sized spare. How do I work a full sized spare into the tire rotation if I am only supposed to rotate my tires front to back and not side to side? Why am I only supposed to rotate the tires front to back and not side to side?
