Strange smell when 'Flooring' it! S70 1998

Hi,

I hope that any other Volvo fanatic can asnwer this question... I have a 98 S70 T5 Se. It has about 86,000 KM on it and is now out of warranty.

When ever I pin the gas - to floor it - or the car is under heavy load, I get an exhaust type smell coming into the passanger compartment via the air vents. The car is an automatic. There is no indication that my fuel economy ( mostly city / some highway) has changed at all ... about 13.5 l /100 km

It isn't the exact same smell as the exhaust from the end pipe - it has a slightly different bouquet, kind of like the smell of hot coolant mixed with exhaust. Is there a leak in the turbo or the hoses? Could I be losing boost pressure? The car does not feel as peppy as it did under similar weather conditions as last year. It is still hitting 100 km (60 mph) in about 6.5 to 6.8 seconds, but it just seems to work that much harder to get it there!!

The only mod I've made to it is the K&N filter - but I get the same smell with or without the OEM filter back in place. It doesn't happen every time I floor it - but quite often.

Any hints or tips about what to look for or ask the technician when I bring it in for a checkup? If it is a boost preasure loss - or somehow the exhaust is leaking from the Turbo - what kind of $$$$ and work is involved in diagnostics and repairs??

Any help would be appreciated - sorry for all the metric #'s ... I'm Canadian eh?

Thanks!

BUZZ!
