Now I'm about to lose it 850 1993

Hi all,

I posted about this one several months ago, but it's turning into one of those "will never figure it out" problems that it so hard to diagnose due to its inconsistency.

I'm talking about a whining sound coming from the engine compartment (probably passenger side) which will kick in intermittently at around 20MPH and will not increase in pitch or volume level, but will keep whining even if I accelerate or hold constant at any speed (including highway speeds). This sound will hold until I slow down to, like 5MPH, and in those last few MPH while the car is crawling to a stop, the whine will increase in pitch (get higher) until it just goes away. Accelerate up to 20MPH and it will start all over. If I slow down to the point where it's just about to go away and accelerate again, it will drop in pitch right back to the original sound.

I don't think it's a bearing noise, bad pulleys, or bad belts.

Weird, huh? It's so damn irritating 'cause it's quite loud and very noticeable from the street. I tried to take it to a mechanic but of course, the car refuses to make the sound for anyone who might actually be able to fix it.

Thanks for any help,

Warren.
