Now I'm about to lose it. Air pump? 850 1993

Most likely source is the air pump (part of the emissions control system) which emits a high-pitched whining sound when it's on. Sounds like a small blender. But it's only supposed to run a couple minutes, until the catalytic converter is warmed up. Perhaps ithas an obstruction, such as the widely reported clogged check valve. Why not look for the fuse to this device, or the electrical connector, and unplug it to see if the sound goes away?
