leak in turbo charger ? 850 1997

I purchased a nice 97 850 glt a little over a year ago.
In the last 3 months I've notice an oil that has been
hitting somewhere on the engine causing that old burn
smell. I took it to my mech and he told me that the
seal in the turbo has a leak and that the only method
of repair is to replace the turbo charger! Yipes!!
Anyone had any experience with their turbos leaking or
having to replace it?
