'94 850 Transmission Problem 850 1994

UPDATE: Transmission Clunk

July 2000: Purchased '94 854 GTAS(65K mi); transmission fluid very clean, car drove well.

June 2001: (74K)Car exhibited following problem, especially after sustained high speed driving when exiting an interstate highway:
When braking to stop, could feel two distinct gear downshifts.
Acceleration led to engine revving, one second hesitation wo/forward movement, and trans goes into gear with a clunk/lurch.
Problem would also occur sporadically after sustained city driving.
Fluid dark and smelled burnt. Volvo Dealer flushed/fluid; reported no codes. Problem disappeared.

June 2002: (80K)Problem returned, w/same physical symptoms, color, and smell. Independent Volvo shop flushed/replaced fluid. Also added trans additive from Bearing & Gear Corp (supposedly only available to shops serviced by B&G).

September 2002: (84K) Problem has not reappeared with both sustained city and freeway driving; I plan to flush/replace every year and use additive.
