Owners of the early 850's with replaceable sway bar bushings by now have probably heard a clunking in the front end from their sway bar moving around inside their worn out bushings. The bushings are fairly cheap and easy to replace except that newer versions of the bushings have been toughened to the point that they wear the bar out so new bushings can't eliminate the looseness. From a tip by Dave H., I tried an aftermarket set of bushings w/brackets that have worked well for me the last 3 months they've been installed so I wanted to post the info for others who may want to try it. BTW, the factory correct solution is a new sway bar from the later 850 years which runs about $190 plus 2 hours labor at a dealer unless you feel comfortable with separating the rear half of the engine cradle to slide the bar out.
The bushing set is a polyurethane universal set from Energy Suspension, (www.energysuspension.com) go to product application listings, universal applications, sway bar bushings. They won't sell direct, you need a distributor, I went with suspension.com in CA ($14.00 plus shipping). For my 21mm bar, the old bushings had worn the bar to about a 20mm diameter. I would suggest that you get the car on ramps, remove the brackets and measure the worn bar to find the size you need instead of assuming you need the same size as me. I chose the 9.5124.G non-greasable, graphite impregnated, 20mm version. It came with brackets, bushings and a tube of lube. One installation note: the left side bushing needs to be chamfered a bit at each opening to fit the bar which has bulges used to locate the bar side to side. I carved away the edge of the bushing around the opening with a utility knife like I was creating a countersink for a screw head, if you can picture what I mean. Only took a couple minutes, not hard. I used the supplied lube and I haven't had any squeaking or clunking for 3 months now. Also, no extra vibration or road noise from the polyurethane mounts.
Hope this helps.
