EGR Valve Pintle Position Circuit Fault? 850

My 97 850 GLT check light came on. I checked the code with an Auto Xray EZLINK scanner - P1406 EGR Valve Pintle Position Circuit Fault. I tried to reset the check engine light and the scanner said "operation unsuccessful". Any one have a suggestion? I don't want to buy an EGR value if that isn't the problem. Also, how do you reset the check engine light?
