Where Do I Go From Here? 850 1993

I took my car to the mechanics to have him look for an exhaust leak. He called back hours later saying that he couldn't find a leak at all. Whenever my car sits still and the climate control is on it smells like exhaust in the car, yet there is no exhaust leak? It has to be coming from somewhere, he said that I could have filled the car up with bad gas and the converter just needs time to "clear itself out." That can't be it, the car has been like this for a while, and, I never get gas the same place and I always use atleast '93 or higher. Any other ideas where it could be coming from?
