Is my transmission on its way out? 850 1993

I went to get my oil changed today and the oil change guy asked me to come into the service bay to see the transmission fluid. I went out and examined the fluid its dark brown and it smells burnt. The thing is I just had it changed (flushed) 17K ago. Does this mean my transmission is at the end of its road? I scheduled an appointment for tommorow to get it flushed.
