After you have the fluid changed, you should get in the habit of checking your fluids often. I do mine every week (as well as tire pressure). I think that this is especially important if you are having your fluids changed by a technician that might be suspect at all. I also think that ALL quick lube places are the definition of suspect! I have used them, but only if I have no other choice (I take their filter and have them use a Volvo filter).
I once had my transmission fluid flushed by a dealer tech, and found it to be nearly the same color after flushing. The service advisor had a tech look at the fluid, and they told me that the flush did not come out properly - they flushed it again for no charge. While not perfect, it was a lot more red.
I like to take the dipstick from each reservoir and wipe some fluid on a clean, white rag - that way you can see its true color and get experience on how your car soils its fluids. I even do a small sample of the coolant once and a while. (Make sure the car is cold if you open the coolant reservoir!) I do not check the condition of the brake fluid as I have it changed every two years and I do not like to disturb the brake fluid reservoir.
Many cars need their power steering fluid flushed also, and any fluid color changes should be evaluated. When I got my first 740 eight years ago, I was surprised at how often they wanted to change various fluids. I now drive two 740s with around 230,000 miles on them, both run well and are reliable - I credit fluid changes with part of that longevity.
