Winter Handling S70

Right now I have a 98 s70 base...with no traction control. I got the car 6 months ago after driving around my old 88 240. In a little less than a year I will be heading off to medical school and they are going to loan me money for a new car if I want. The area is notorious for heavy snowfall and unless they cancel I cant miss. My question is what is the best snow handling volvo and what options do I need to have in this car. Can anyone fill me in as to how much better the AWD system is than FWD ?
