Program the remote 850 1994

I purchased a used remote fob for my 850 wagon. I went to the dealer to have it programmed, but since my hatch door does not lock/unlock properly (does not lock itself with my current fob or using the key in the driver side door unless I manually lock with the key) the service tech said he could not program the fob. When the hatch and doors are locked the red light activates so I assume the alarm is functioning (I know for a fact the alarm works as I have set it off in the past). The manual says there is a way to have the hatch operate both dependently or independently of the remote fob, at least that is how I read it.
Anyone else have problems such as this? Is there a way to program the remote on my own?
If you have any answers they would be greatly appreciated... or if you need more info I will be more than happy to provide such...
