alternator 850 1995

Two questions: First, local shop put in new battery but then said alternator was bad. I'm showing voltage at the battery of 16 volts on my own meter. Is that acceptable? Seems way too high.

If I have to replace the alternator, what do I have to take off to get at the alternator?
